In short, DOT is an association for students who are interested in computer graphics, demoscene, game development, programming and doing creative things with computers in general.

Longer description

DOT, or Digital Media Club of Aalto University (Digitaalisen median ammattiainekerho in Finnish), is one of the more than 150 associations that operate in the vicinity of Aalto University Stydent Union (AYY). AYY is a 15000 members strong student organization which all Aalto University students undertaking bachelor’s or master’s degrees are members of.

DOT as an association is targeted at students who are interested in computer graphics, demoscene, game development, programming and doing creative things with computers in general.

Most members of DOT (around 100 at the moment) are studying at Aalto, but some of us come from other schools in Helsinki area or have already graduated.

DOT organizes events around once in three weeks during semesters. The selection includes sauna evenings, excursions, lecture-type events and game nights to name a few. About once a year we also go to visit a company or invite company to visit us - our recent visitors include RedLynx. We are also organizing Graffathon every year.

DOT is run by a board that is selected yearly and contains 5 or more members. That is also why we don't have activities every week like some other associations - most of the board members are studying full time and many also work alongside the studies, and since the number of organizers is quite low, we try to keep everyone happy with smaller number of (hopefully better) events.

Little history

The original name of the association was Demoscene in Otaniemi (from which the abbreviation DOT comes from) and during the first years the activities included mainly viewing together Amiga, PC, C64 and other demos, going to different demo parties and programming. Other activites, like excursions to various companies and gaming-related events followed and the name of the association name was changed to Digitaalisen median ammattiainekerho (Finnish). After Helsinki University of Technology became Aalto University, the English name of the club was invented to support internalization of DOT.

Unfortunately our web page is available only in Finnish. Sorry about that! Changing our main language to English has been on our TODO list for a while, but as it requires quite much work, we haven't gotten yet to do it. In the meantime visit our IRC channel #dot@IRCnet or send email to dot-hallitus(ät)list.ayy.fi if you have any questions or would be interested in our activities.
